Ninewells Healthcare Professionals Engage with Pupils as Part of Healthcare Science Week
Last week, healthcare professionals and scientists from NHS Tayside spent the morning at Dundee Science Centre engaging with primary and secondary school students.
As part of Healthcare Science Week 2026, staff and volunteers from Ninewells hospital delivered a range of exciting, hands-on activities linked to their specialist fields. Multiple departments were represented, including medical physics/radiography, virology/microbiology, assisted conception/embryology, genetics, audiology, and bowel screening.
With over 160 primary students in attendance, alongside secondary pupils, each department brought its work to life through interactive experiences – all designed to spark curiosity and broaden young people’s understanding of healthcare science itself, and the careers within the NHS.
The Audiology team, for example, introduced a wobble board activity to demonstrate how the inner ear (vestibular system) supports balance and coordination. Pupils were able to physically explore how their bodies respond to movement, connecting this experience to how the inner ear detects position and motion.
Meanwhile, the Assisted Conception Unit led engaging activities to highlight the challenges sperm cells face in reaching and fertilising an egg, helping students better understand the complexities of human reproduction.
It was fantastic to welcome local healthcare professionals and scientists from NHS Tayside to the centre. The event provided a valuable opportunity for them to share their expertise, inspire the next generation, and showcase the wide range of career pathways within healthcare science.
