Local Workers Pave the Way for Outdoor Revamp
Three employees from Dundee’s EE offices, neighbours of Dundee Science Centre, used their volunteer day to help prepare the Centre’s outdoor spaces for an exciting transformation.
The trio, who regularly enjoy the area for fresh air and breaks in good weather, rolled up their sleeves and donned their gardening gloves and winter coats to clear litter, cut back overgrown areas and spruce up the outdoor spaces.
The tidy-up comes as Dundee Science Centre gears up to reimagine its outdoor areas for its 25th-anniversary celebrations. A competition is currently underway, inviting local secondary school pupils to co-create new designs for the spaces at the front and sides of the building, working in collaboration with students from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design (DJCAD).
Competition entries will be displayed at Dundee Science Centre during Dundee Science Festival (9-22 February 2026), with members of the public invited to vote for their favourite designs.
Shortlisted entries will then be developed into professional visualisations or models and exhibited within the Centre, before selected designs are brought to life and installed. To help focus ideas, designs will reflect the overarching theme of Past, Present, Future, with students encouraged to explore themes such as Future Environments, Energy and Innovation or Human Wellbeing.
Jill Farrell, CEO of Dundee Science Centre, said, “EE are our neighbours and regularly enjoy using our outdoor space during the summer, so we were delighted when they offered to help tidy up the area as the competition reaches its next stages. No organisation can achieve everything alone so it’s great to see EE share our values and get involved. Reimagining our underused external spaces is very much part of our longer-term aims, and we’re so excited to see this project gather speed and become a wider community effort.”
Damon Ednie, Community Rep at EE, said, “We try to volunteer a lot in the local community, and we’re lucky to have the privilege to do so. We’re right next door to Dundee Science Centre, and we can see the building from our offices. So, it feels right to dedicate our time here and tidy up the area. I feel pride in making a difference and seeing how clean the space looks for the benefit of those nearby. Working in an office all day can be quite repetitive and volunteering to clean up this area has a positive impact on the community, which is a plus”.
