Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun in our solar system. It’s a very special planet because it’s the smallest and fastest one! It’s also the closest to the Sun, which means it gets really, really hot. But it’s not a place where people or animals could live because it’s too hot and doesn’t have any air to breathe.

Fun Facts:

• Speedy Mercury: Mercury is like the speedy runner of the planets. It zooms around the Sun faster than any other planet. It takes only about 88 Earth days for Mercury to go around the Sun once!
• Scorching Hot and Super Cold: Even though Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun, it’s not the hottest. That’s because it doesn’t have much of an atmosphere to keep in the heat. During the day, it can get hotter than a hot oven, but at night, it gets super cold, even colder than a freezer!
• No Air to Breathe: Mercury doesn’t have any air like we do on Earth. This means there’s nothing to breathe. If you went to Mercury, you’d need a special suit with air to stay safe.
• Rocky Surface: Mercury’s surface is covered in rocks and craters. It looks a bit like the Moon because it doesn’t have much air or water to change the landscape.
• Weird Days and Nights: A day on Mercury is really strange. It’s longer than its year! One day on Mercury (from sunrise to sunrise) is about 176 Earth days. This is because it takes a long time for Mercury to spin all the way around.
• Tiniest Planet: Mercury is the smallest planet in our solar system. It’s even smaller than some of the moons around other planets!
• Named After a Speedy God: Mercury is named after the messenger god from ancient Roman mythology. This god was known for being very fast, just like the planet Mercury that moves so quickly around the Sun.
• Visited by Spacecraft: Humans have sent spacecraft to visit Mercury. One of them is called MESSENGER, which helped us learn a lot about this small, speedy planet.
• Interesting Shadows: Because of the way the Sun shines on Mercury, the shadows there can be really long and stretchy. It makes the planet’s surface look even more mysterious!
• No Moons: Unlike some other planets, Mercury doesn’t have any moons of its own. It’s all by itself as it zooms around the Sun.
