Leverhulme Research Centre for Forensic Science Inspires Future Scientists at Dundee Science Centre Takeover

 Back News - - 1 minute read.
Last week, the Leverhulme Research Centre for Forensic Science transformed Dundee Science Centre into a hub of discovery, curiosity, and hands-on learning – as visitors of all ages were invited to explore the fascinating world of forensic science.

The special takeover event featured a range of interactive exhibits and activities, designed to demonstrate how forensic science is used in real-world investigations – whilst also showcasing ground-breaking new technologies shaping the future of the field.

Stationed throughout the exhibition spaces were a series of themed stations, each offering visitors the chance to step into the shoes of a forensic scientist. Participants could analyse clues, solve mini challenges, and learn about techniques used to gather and interpret evidence. As they completed each activity, visitors collected a sticker for their booklet – encouraging them to explore every station and fully immerse themselves in the experience. The sticker trail proved especially popular with younger visitors, who eagerly moved from one station to the next building their own forensic science journey.

The takeover provided a fantastic opportunity to engage young minds and spark curiosity about science, technology, and investigation. By presenting complex scientific ideas in accessible, hands-on ways, the event helped break down barriers to science learning, and demonstrated that forensic science is not only important but also exciting and approachable. Families, school-aged children, and lifelong learners alike were able to connect with the science behind crime scene investigation in a welcoming and interactive environment.

One of the standout highlights of the day was the appearance of Jute, the robot dog – an advanced robotic assistant capable of entering areas that may be too dangerous or inaccessible for human investigators. Equipped with state-of-the-art cameras and sensing technology, Jute can capture and analyse detailed visual evidence, supporting forensic teams in documenting crime scenes safely and efficiently. Throughout the event, crowds gathered to watch demonstrations and learn how robotic technology is becoming an increasingly valuable tool in modern forensic investigations.

The Leverhulme Research Centre for Forensic Science takeover was a memorable and inspiring event, offering visitors a rare opportunity to experience the cutting edge of forensic science first-hand. By combining education, technology, and interactive fun, the event successfully showcased how science can be used to solve real-world problems – all whilst inspiring the next generation of scientists, investigators, and innovators.
