10th Dundee Science Festival Gets Underway

Published: 9.49am,

The programme for the 10th Dundee Science Festival was officially launched on Wednesday 2 October 2019.

The celebration of science will run from Saturday 5 October through to Sunday 20 October 2019, with over 30 events designed to entertain, inspire and fascinate, most of which are free of charge.

As the final countdown begins, the festival was officially launched with the team illustrating the themes of the three special weekend events with robots, a 'spaceman' and some medieval mechanics. These family-focused events will run at Dundee Science Centre over the three weekends of the festival, all taking place from 10am until 5pm (standard entry fees apply).

Once again, families and communities are at the heart of Dundee Science Festival with free 'Science Adventure', 'Early Explorer' and 'Creative Workshop' events heading out to nine community hubs throughout Dundee, more than ever before. There will also be a spicy look at the 'Chemistry of Curry' sponsored by the Royal Society of Chemistry, a 'Rockin' Rockets' show and free creative workshops challenging visitors to transform old jewellery into stunning new pieces or build an obstacles-avoiding robot.

The first themed weekend, 'Blueprint to Build', will take place on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 October, exploring themes of design and engineering. Visitors can take part in fantastic activities delivered by a variety of experts throughout the weekend, while enjoying everything that Dundee Science Centre's brand new exhibition 'Medieval Machines' has to offer. The 'Medieval Mechanics' show will run throughout the festival.

On Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 October, 'Stars and Skies' will take visitors on a journey through the galaxy and the final weekend, 'Wee Wans and Zeroes' will host a range of experts on digital and gaming themes. Come and explore some of the gadgets and innovations which are transforming our everyday lives on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 October!

This year, Dundee Science Centre is adding three sensory-friendly mornings into the festival programme (Monday 7, Monday 14 and Thursday 17 October). Opening earlier than normal (9am), the centre will be made more accessible for those with autism and other sensory conditions, with lights dimmed and sound turned down. These measures will stay in place until midday on each of the three mornings.

Tony Canning, Exhibition and Community Engagement Officer, Dundee Science Centre said, "As we mark the 10th Dundee Science Festival, we've lined up a huge range of events in more areas of the city than ever before. With countless exciting and inspiring hands-on science activities for families and individuals alike, there really is something for everyone, from robots and live shows to relaxing sessions for toddlers. Come along and try something new, regardless of your interest in science!"

Dundee Science Festival is brought to you by Dundee Science Centre, supported by a wide range of funders.
