Local primary school children are flying the flag for conservation by protecting their feathered friends.

Dundee Science Centre is delivering two bird box kits to primary schools throughout Dundee, encouraging pupils to learn more about birdlife, attract more species into their outdoor space, and spark new activities around wildlife and conservation.

The ready-to-build bird boxes, which pupils can also decorate, are accompanied by bird seeds and a book packed with activities and wildlife tips.

Kelly Smith, Primary seven Teacher at St Pius X RC Primary School, who also runs their Eco Club said,

“It is important for children to be curious about the environment and do their bit to protect it. Encouraging their interest from an early age allows the best chance that they will grow up equipped with the knowledge to take care of the planet for future generations and ensures that environmental decisions made on an international level filter down to local communities.”

Carlene Cura, Development and Fundraising Advisor, Dundee Science Centre, added,

“We’re delighted to be offering bird boxes to every primary school in Dundee, encouraging pupils to see and explore the wildlife around them and attract more species into their garden or outdoor space.

“By engaging youngsters in wildlife conservation at this very local level, they’re more likely to build an interest and curiosity in the great outdoors going forwards. It’s also a great way for schools to start conversations about the wildlife we take for granted in and around our towns and cities, to watch them and their behaviours close-up, and to highlight the importance of protecting them and their habitats.”

Echoing the aims of the schools programme, Dundee Science Centre has also recently installed four new bird boxes within its outdoor space to the rear of the centre, beautifully designed by local artist Joanne Lyon . With the onset of Spring, Dundee Science Centre will be expanding its outdoor offering and activity in the coming months.
